The Wall Street Journal recently ran an article entitled “How to Travel Smart This Summer”.  Here I will summarize their thoughts as well as add a few of my own since travel has gotten even more complicated and expensive with the high cost of fuel.

Don’t change your mind

The fees of most and many have increased.  In this tight market, these providers are less likely to be forgiving on a change and are going to take the opportunity to extract more money from your wallet now that you are probably in panic mode.  WSJ says that American is now charging $150 on changes.

A few years ago the city of Cincinnati built a stadium for what at the time was one of the worst teams in professional football. This is probably what they needed to turn the franchise around. Playing in a beautiful stadium must have been the magic since the Bengals are typically a very competitive team now and often discussed as a playoff contender.

The stadium is one of the nicest venues that you will find. It holds over 65,000 screaming fans, it has fantastic scoreboards that show live video, and has plenty of restrooms. It is the only stadium to make the “Americans’ Favorite Buildings” coming in at 101. Only 10 sporting structures made that list.

Though most travelers escape to the during the winter months, the summer travel season can offer families with tighter budgets a chance to experience the most exciting islands. While many people assume that the image Caribbean is too hot and humid to be enjoyed in the summer, the truth is that temperatures are consistent year-round throughout much of the region because of the prevailing trade winds. Instead of high temperatures, visitors can expect an incredible array of festivals and local celebrations wherever they travel. Most importantly for many families, room rates and recreation fees are typically much lower during the summer months, allowing conscientious travelers to plan an exciting and affordable Caribbean vacation.

Taking a on can be an exciting adventure for you and your family. Since every different ports of call, I won’t discuss the itinerary here but rather will discuss the ship and leaving from Tampa Bay, Florida.

There may be great advantages to leaving from Tampa Bay rather than the more traditional Miami, Florida. The most likely advantage is cost. Since Tampa Bay is farther north on the Florida peninsula, logic dictates that your cost to get to this port should be lower. Unfortunately, logic never seems to be a driving factor with airline prices!

This is a first class facility for watching with 18,000 of your best friends. The Pacers have a long history as part of the NBA and, previously, the ABA. You will see plenty of tributes to the great players and teams of the past and if you are a big fan of professional you will be tested by your knowledge of the history of the game.

The in the arena is not fantastic but is typical of most professional basketball venues. The Starbuck’s and the gift shop are top notch.

Parking in the area is fairly affordable and convenient. You should be able to find a $5 spot within a couple of blocks (unless the Pacers are playing great and the rates go up). While you are in downtown Indy, make sure that you spend some time enjoying some of the great shops and restaurants that make up this thriving downtown. The city leaders of Indianapolis have done a great job in making the city vibrant and you would not expect that a city in the “rust belt” would have their act together so well.

Tickets to any professional basketball game will set you back considerably and the Pacers are not an exception. However if you can afford it, an evening at Conseco field while visiting Indianapolis is a great time!

This is probably the Midwest’s best family and spa that also includes great fantastic . This resort has enjoyed a $14M renovation since 2003 and that only adds to the luster of this great destination.

The resort features 3 great golf courses. Bear by Jack Nicklaus, Wolverine by Gary Player, and Spruce Run by William Newcomb. These three amazing golf courses will thrill and challenge any golfer but offer fair play for the average or young golfer. Jim McLean also runs a great school on the facility which will help you work out that kink in your swing.

When you look at a map of the US, Florida is very prominently displayed as a peninsula hanging down from Georgia. However, one of the best locations in Florida is not on the massive peninsula but rather on the “panhandle” portion of the state sitting above the Gulf of . This strip of land is home to some of the most inviting and enjoyable soft, white sand beaches in the world. The major cities on this coast are Panama City and Destin.

The shore around Destin is dotted almost continuously with large and small developments of and condos. These mini-resorts typically feature pools and free access to the . While I may write in the future about individual places to stay, for right now I will focus on the .

Depending on the time of year, the beach is beautiful. There is always the chance that when you visit, there will be algae in the water or a swarm of jelly fish will move in but that is the danger whenever you go to the beach.

Almost everywhere you go on this long beach, you will find it to be 30-60 yards deep. This is more than enough room for families to dig castles, fly kites, play catch or just soak in the rays without offending or be offended by others. The beach is typically left unguarded but there are sections where the lifeguards are in attendance.

You can also go into the Choctawhatchee Bay which provides the back side of the small peninsula that Destin sits on. In this bay, where the waves are much more mild, you can easily do various water activities such as para-sailing and jet boating.

If you enjoy playing in ocean water, building a sand castle, and relaxing with a good book on a beach then there are very few locations in the world that are as economical and accessible as Destin, FL.

It really doesn’t get much better than Yankee Stadium for tradition. Unfortunately, if you haven’t visited this, the 3rd oldest stadium, you need to hurry. Construction has begun on the New Yankee Stadium!

Like all of the old parks, this icon of baseball legends doesn’t have all of the modern conveniences. It also is not the most spacious in seating but the experience of watching a game in the same place that Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig played in is something absolutely special.
