Many people travel in order to make their living. I am not speaking of and but instead regular business folks. They have to go to meetings, visit suppliers, and visit clients. They spend long hours in , and planes.

  1. . Actually an is okay to give but since it requires a cellular data plan it is not a fantastic gift. Make sure that the iPod Touch has as much memory as possible so that multimedia files can be stored and played.

The Wall Street Journal recently ran an article entitled “How to Travel Smart This Summer”.  Here I will summarize their thoughts as well as add a few of my own since travel has gotten even more complicated and expensive with the high cost of fuel.

Don’t change your mind

The fees of most and many have increased.  In this tight market, these providers are less likely to be forgiving on a change and are going to take the opportunity to extract more money from your wallet now that you are probably in panic mode.  WSJ says that American is now charging $150 on changes.

Embassy Suites are usually a good deal for families as well as frequent travelers. While they are rarely a destination themselves, they can be a great respite after a long day at a vacation destination or a restful stop in your journey.

The Embassy Suites that is just south of the Dallas-Fort Worth is very nice at first glance but tends to fall apart after a closer look. The lobby of this hotel is laid out in typical Embassy fashion – a very large atrium surrounded by floors of suites. This atrium is very well done featuring a large waterfall that fills the space with white noise. The waterfall lands into a very nice looking pond that is filled with koi.

However, entering your suite brings a different perspective. Here you will likely find outdated and worn furniture. A sink that doesn’t have a stopper. And worse yet, water damage on the ceiling of the bathroom that has been poorly plastered over and said plaster has never seen a brush with paint on it.

Water damage that has been poorly fixed and old furniture is what I expect at discount along the interstates. It is not expected at a suite hotel that is part of the family and costs in excess of $150 per night. You can bet that Paris would never stay at this location!

Have you ever wanted to send some of your things ahead for your trip?  This can be especially helpful for or vacations.  For the beach, you may want your beach ball, tennis racket, etc. to be waiting for you.  For , you have all that heavy winter clothing that needs to arrive at your location but you don’t need it until then and definitely don’t want it on the plane.

The easiest way to do this is to contact your hotel that you are visiting.  Most of the better ones will hold your package for a reasonable time. If they don’t perform this service, you may want to consider a different establishment for your business!

Earlier, I wrote about being stuck in the Atlanta airport and suggested that instead of trying to rush through the you instead spend the night and enjoy the city.  But where to stay? You might consider The Glenn Hotel.

Sure, you could stay at the standard chain but they will look the same as the ones in your own hometown and all you will really get is a decent bed (maybe). The Glenn Hotel is different. It is designed to be a "boutique" hotel and is not like any chain hotel that you ever stayed in.

Okay, no one really wants to visit the Atlanta but the saying still stands that whether you are going to heaven or hell, you have to transfer in Atlanta.

So what do you do if you are stuck in the Atlanta airport for a layover? If you are a frequent flier, then you should probably invest in a membership at one of the airline clubs. That is easily the most comfortable way to deal with a 4 hour layover.

Cedar Point amusement park in Sandusky, OH is a roller coaster lover’s amusement park. At the time of this writing there were 17 roller coasters (more than any other in the world) and many of them set some type of record. These roller coasters include the old fashioned Blue Streak, Wildcat, and Gemini (a thrilling wood coaster in its own right) to amazing modern coasters such as Magnum XL-200, Millenium Force, Raptor, and Wicked Twister.

The park is a little hard to get to. It is located on Lake Erie and is a fair drive from either Cleveland or Toledo. Due to its location, many people will have to take long drives to the park and spend the night either before or after. There are dozens of affordable and motels to stay at and here is a link to a few of them.

The owners of Cedar Point also own a few hotels and some of these are attractions to themselves. The Hotel Breakers is actually on the grounds of the park and is a magnificent hotel. You may be interested in staying at the water park based hotel, Castaway Bay, and turn your trip to Cedar Point into a multiple day mini-vacation. You can find other Cedar Point Resorts here.

At the park, you really must try the turkey legs which are a bit of a local treat. And aside from the  many thrill rides and roller coasters, make sure that you take the Sky Ride from one end of the park to the other, it is a fun way to travel and see all of the sites.

No trip to the park is complete without purchasing some of its taffy. Save your purchase for the end of the day so you can have a sugar high on the drive to the hotel, home, or .
