The Weather Channel has compiled a great list of the worst airports in the US for weather delays (along with reasons why they made the list). Here is the list, you can click each one to go to that particular city.

One thing to remember on weather related flight problems, it is often not winter that is disruptive. While snow storms will tend to close an airport for long periods and allow TV stations to show video of stranded travelers, sometimes the summer is worse. Thunderstorms are highly disruptive – they move ground crew inside for fear of lightning and they cause planes to talk long trips around the storms.

Minneapolis-St. Paul, MN

Philadelphia, PA

San Francisco, CA

St. Louis, MO

Atlanta, GA

While it may be advisable to avoid these airports, with the exception of maybe #10, they all tend to be major destinations and transfer points. It may be impossible to travel without touching these airports or being affected by delays that they have.

A few years ago the city of Cincinnati built a stadium for what at the time was one of the worst teams in professional football. This is probably what they needed to turn the franchise around. Playing in a beautiful stadium must have been the magic since the Bengals are typically a very competitive team now and often discussed as a playoff contender.

The stadium is one of the nicest football venues that you will find. It holds over 65,000 screaming fans, it has fantastic scoreboards that show live video, and has plenty of restrooms. It is the only football stadium to make the “Americans’ Favorite Buildings” coming in at 101. Only 10 sporting structures made that list.

The nickname for the facility is “The Jungle” so named for the Guns N Roses song “Welcome to the Jungle”. The nickname carried over from the old stadium and is sometimes credited to the quarterback Boomer Esiason.

Overall the viewing experience of a Cincinnati Bengals game at Paul Brown Stadium is excellent. If you are a football fan and have an opportunity to be in Cincinnati on a football Sunday, you will enjoy your experience. Since many of those 65,000 seats are sold though, you may need to buy your tickets from a service or a scalper on the street (legal if not on the grounds of the stadium).

The furnishings are first rate, the bar is fun and often crowded with attractive people, and the shower is wonderful. Actually, wonderful is an understatement when describing this shower since it has 5 shower heads and it dumps so much water on you that you feel like you just finished a professional massage.

There are other fine hotels across the country that offer fantastic showers, beautiful bars, and top-notch furnishings. But those hotels tend to be in very large metropolitan centers or resort destinations, not in a town that grew on the banks of the Ohio River. They also don’t have the free parking that is available at this hotel or the warmth and friendliness of staff that is unique to southern Indiana.

This site is dedicated to discussing places to visit on vacation but maybe we should consider Le Merigot as an evening vacation as we just try to get through the dreariness of life (and it definitely beats staying at the Holiday Inn Express).

Embassy Suites are usually a good deal for families as well as frequent travelers. While they are rarely a destination themselves, they can be a great respite after a long day at a vacation destination or a restful stop in your journey.

The Embassy Suites that is just south of the Dallas-Fort Worth airport is very nice at first glance but tends to fall apart after a closer look. The lobby of this hotel is laid out in typical Embassy fashion – a very large atrium surrounded by floors of suites. This atrium is very well done featuring a large waterfall that fills the space with white noise. The waterfall lands into a very nice looking pond that is filled with koi.

However, entering your suite brings a different perspective. Here you will likely find outdated and worn furniture. A sink that doesn’t have a stopper. And worse yet, water damage on the ceiling of the bathroom that has been poorly plastered over and said plaster has never seen a brush with paint on it.

Water damage that has been poorly fixed and old furniture is what I expect at discount hotels along the interstates. You can bet that Paris would never stay at this location!

The Canada Pavilion will definitely remind you the ruggedness and landscape of the northernmost country of the North American continent. The architecture features stone and exposed wood. The pavilion is decorated with a canyon, a waterfall, gardens, a pool with fountains, and totem poles.

In general the shops in this pavilion are quite forgettable. While you may find a carving that you admire or other such craft item, you will recognize nearly every item in every store.

Canada does feature a beautiful movie, O Canada!, that shows much of the gorgeous countryside of this vast nation. This movie will be very enjoyable to the adult members of your family but may not appeal to the children of your group.

There is a reasonable restaurant for snacks at this pavilion but the real attraction is the full service steakhouse, Le Cellier. While your food won’t be as good as the extremely high end steakhouse in your hometown, you will be happy with this choice if you crave steak for dinner when in the park.

While this pavilion is not my favorite within the World Showcase, you should make it one of your stops as you circle the lake.

Taking a cruise on Carnival can be an exciting adventure for you and your family. Since every cruise sports different ports of call, I won’t discuss the itinerary here but rather will discuss the ship and leaving from Tampa Bay, Florida.

There may be great advantages to leaving from Tampa Bay rather than the more traditional Miami, Florida. The most likely advantage is cost. Since Tampa Bay is farther north on the Florida peninsula, logic dictates that your cost to get to this port should be lower. Unfortunately, logic never seems to be a driving factor with airline prices!

The other major advantage is that it is easier to got to western ports of call from Tampa Bay rather than Miami. This can result in more exotic places to visit such as Cayman Islands, Mexico, and Jamaica. While other cruises from Miami may get you to these exotic locales, it will surely take longer and likely will include a stop at a “boring” place like the Florida Keys.

It is important to do a lot of price comparisons when looking for a cruise. Balance all of your costs as well as balance the hassle of getting to your debarkation port. Tampa Bay may just fit the bill when you balance all of this out.

At some point in the future, I will write about individual cruise itineraries.

The food in the arena is not fantastic but is typical of most professional basketball venues. The Starbuck’s and the gift shop are top notch.

Parking in the area is fairly affordable and convenient. You should be able to find a $5 spot within a couple of blocks (unless the Pacers are playing great and the rates go up). While you are in downtown Indy, make sure that you spend some time enjoying some of the great shops and restaurants that make up this thriving downtown. The city leaders of Indianapolis have done a great job in making the city vibrant and you would not expect that a city in the “rust belt” would have their act together so well.

Tickets to any professional basketball game will set you back considerably and the Pacers are not an exception. However if you can afford it, an evening at Conseco field while visiting Indianapolis is a great time!

Do you like steak? I mean, do you REALLY like steak? Then, when you are in Dallas TX, you should check out the Butcher Shop Steakhouse on Munger Avenue.

Unlike most steakhouses, here you have more than just your choice of a fine cut of meat. At this large, open restaurant you have the opportunity to grill your steak to the perfection that you desire. If you want the experts to grill the steak for you while you enjoy your salad and favorite beverage, that is fine as well.

The menu is fairly simple. It is mostly different cuts of steak and a variety of sizes. It includes a few seafood fares and chicken but if you want a nice pasta then you are at the wrong place. Your sides of vegetables and potatoes are going to be ala carte. The wine list is decent but not extraordinary. The bar is stocked with an appropriate mix of beer in bottles and several on tap. The liquor assortment is typical for steak restaurant. The overall prices are a bit on the expensive side but not unreasonable for a high end steak restaurant and quite comparable to Ruth Chris.

Don’t worry about saving room for desert as the menu is quite lean in that area. You are better off finding a local ice cream shop, if you still have room after your massive hunk of meat!

The wait staff is very courteous and actually quite fun. The restaurant is a bit of an adventure so they don’t get too stuffy. This is fairly typical service of a good Texas restaurant.

Probably the best advice to give is to come very hungry because when you leave you are going to be very full.

UPDATE: On a recent visit to Dallas, I was able to sit down at this old favorite. Unfortunately, my visit was less than satisfying and I no longer recommend this establishment. The Butcher Shop is under new management and they have not kept up the status. In our group of 4 people, no one had an “awesome” steak and one of our members had to send it back. Also, the waiter discouraged us from grilling our own steak. Even a simple substitution of type of potato with the meal was met with a “No – we can’t do that”. Save your time and money and go to a different steak house when you are visiting Dallas.

This resort has enjoyed a $14M renovation since 2003 and that only adds to the luster of this great destination.

The resort features 3 great golf courses. Bear by Jack Nicklaus, Wolverine by Gary Player, and Spruce Run by William Newcomb. These three amazing golf courses will thrill and challenge any golfer but offer fair play for the average or young golfer. Jim McLean also runs a great school on the facility which will help you work out that kink in your swing.

Speaking of kinks. Don’t forget to check out the spa! They will give you first-class treatment for a very affordable price so you have no excuse not to get a great massage after a long day on the links.

Nearby Traverse City is a family vacation destination and also has many dining and entertainment options. Make sure to take an afternoon’s adventure on a sailing schooner which can be easily rented from several establishments. While you are in Northern Michigan, enjoy an afternoon exploring the shifting sands and unusual ecosystem of Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes National Lakeshore.

Of course with Lake Michigan so close, hiking, fishing, sailing, scuba diving, and so much more make Grand Traverse a great spring and summer destination.
If you are more inclined to enjoy winter sports, the resort sits at the core of a ski country triangle of three of Michigan’s top ski areas. With a multitude of challenging downhill runs and miles of pristine cross-country trails, the Grand Traverse region is the perfect place for hours of snow-filled fun. With slopes ranging from bunny hills to black diamond runs, and touring trails, Traverse City offers variety for skiers of all abilities and fortitudes. Families will love the wide array of children’s activities, including group lessons and infant care.

Since you are deep in the heart of some Native American lands, it is also possible for you to enjoy world class gambling at some of the local casinos. Most notable of these is Leelanau Sands. Here you will find your favorite games and a much friendlier dealer than you can find in Las Vegas.

Earlier, I wrote about being stuck in the Atlanta airport and suggested that instead of trying to rush through the airport you instead spend the night and enjoy the city. But where to stay? You might consider The Glenn Hotel.

Sure, you could stay at the standard chain hotels but they will look the same as the ones in your own hometown and all you will really get is a decent bed (maybe). The Glenn Hotel is different. It is designed to be a "boutique" hotel and is not like any chain hotel that you ever stayed in.

The building was supposedly converted from an office building and it shows a little but that isn’t a bad thing since it allows a departure from the chain concept. The name of the building and the hotel date back to a former mayor of Atlanta in the early 1900s. The lobby is very contemporary and lends a sense of fun to your stay.

The rooms offer WiFi and phones just like you would expect. The design and colors are very modern and will definitely not remind you of your favorite Hampton Inn. If you are staying with a partner, you may be a little surprised at the slightly opaque window in the shower!

This is not a family friendly hotel. While there is nothing that is R rated, there are several allusions to sexual situations that your older children may ask you about (or maybe explain to you). Even still, for its adult orientation one would think that it would have a larger workout room. During peak times, you may experience a wait for your favorite machine.

The bar on the roof is the highlight of the hotel. If the weather is decent, you should enjoy your favorite beverage (or two) on the roof and enjoy the beautiful view of downtown Atlanta.

The Seas with Nemo & Friends is one of the few pavilions in EPCOT that is so obviously themed after a Disney brand. The pavilion was originally called The Seas but the success of the Nemo movie put a strong brand on the property even to the point of changing the name. Other pavilions in the park will feature a Disney character or brand but only this pavilion has taken the branding to this edge.

The largest attraction in The Seas is the very large aquarium. Kids of all ages from 3 to 93 will enjoy watching the fish and dolphins swim around. In a separate pond are manatees that have been rescued from the wild and are being rehabilitated before their return.

It is worth watching the manatees, if only to support the efforts of Disney in this important environmental cause. Disney is a profit oriented corporation and if people are enjoying an exhibit that also is good for the world, they are more likely to continue that effort. Therefore, please make this exhibit part of your itinerary to this park.

If you haven’t been to EPCOT lately, then you need to go on "The Seas with Nemo and Friends" ride. It opened in early 2007 and you will board "clam-mobiles" and meet Mr. Ray and his class on a field trip and soon learn that Nemo has wandered off. The journey in search of Nemo includes familiar characters such as Dory, Bruce, Marlin, Squirt and Crush. These deep-sea friends inhabit a variety of vibrant vignettes, including the actual aquarium containing more than 65 species of marine life. In the musical finale, Nemo is happily reunited with his class and friends.

"Turtle Talk with Crush!" is another great exhibit. This interactive show features a computer-animated version of the surfer dude turtle from "Finding Nemo" in 10-minute conversations with visitors. The technology behind Crush is amazing as he looks at the person he’s talking with and really interacts with people. For example, the host will ask a kid his name and Crush will say "Hello, Sam" He makes jokes and takes questions from audience. The show lasts about 10 minutes and is very enjoyable. Dory also may appear with Crush.

"Bruce’s Sub House" is another newer theme in the pavilion that your children will enjoy. It is a hands-on play area geared to kids. The area features some of other characters from the movie and makes for a great photo opportunity. Kids can learn a few things by lifting the flaps on and reading through the various displays. Younger children may be a little timid of the low lighting levels but there is nothing particularly scary in the attraction.

Evidently, the pavilion is only open during particularly busy times or perhaps when other pavilions are closed for renovation.

I also suspect that the pavilion is used for more corporate events where a visiting company or association will rent out the pavilion for an evening after the park has closed.

As of August of 2007, some of the signs in front of Wonders of Life have been removed so the current plans for the facility are unknown and you should not plan on entering this pavilion.

I suggest that you read information from other sites on the web that have reviewed this pavilion. Here are a few:

The Land is on the west side of the FutureWorld part of EPCOT. It, traditionally, has not been the most highly sought after pavilion but due to its new remodeling it has re-emerged as a "can’t miss" property.

The big reason to make sure your day includes The Land is the attraction Soarin’ which was added just a couple years ago. The attraction sends you on a sweeping flyover above California for a birds-eye view of the rich landscape and topography. The unforgettable experience combines cinematic artistry and state-of-the-art motion base technology. You are lifted inside a giant projection screen dome and completely surrounded with the beauty and wonder of the state of California as you fly over the Golden Gate Bridge, the Redwood forests, Napa Valley, Yosemite and more. The free-flight experience intensifies as you feel the sweeping winds and smell fragrant orange blossoms and pine trees.

You will likely need to get a FastPass for Soarin’ so plan to stop in by mid-day before they are all sold out.

Living with the Land also has FastPass capability but you probably don’t need it except on the busiest of days. This is a leisurely and educational boat ride through EPCOT’s greenhouses. While the adventure loving members of your clan may be bored with the presentation, it does offer a good respite from the heat of the day and you will likely learn something as well.

Probably the best part of The Land is the restaurants. With the exception of the ethnic restaurants of the World Showcase in the back half of the park, The Land has the best menu. If you are only in the park for one day, you should eat at one of the World Showcase countries but if you have a multi-day trip, you will not go wrong in The Land.

Okay, no one really wants to visit the Atlanta airport but the saying still stands that whether you are going to heaven or hell, you have to transfer in Atlanta.

Okay, no one really wants to visit the Atlanta airport but the saying still stands that whether you are going to heaven or hell, you have to transfer in Atlanta.

So what do you do if you are stuck in the Atlanta airport for a layover? If you are a frequent flier, then you should probably invest in a membership at one of the airline clubs. That is easily the most comfortable way to deal with a 4 hour layover.

If you can’t join a club, you need to do something to deal with the layover. You may want to increase your layover and leave the airport all together. Most airlines consider less than 24 hours a connection so it isn’t like buying 2 sets of tickets. Atlanta is a wonderful city to visit combining southern charm with a mix of influences from across the country due to its very transient population.

It may seem that every other street is called Peachtree but there are several great restaurants and a lot of shopping in the city. So rather stressing about your layover, take another night and leave the airport and enjoy Atlanta – home and work will still be there the next day.

But if you really must spend a couple hours in one of the busiest airports in the US, what do you do? Unfortunately, if you don’t want to leave the secure area and decide to stick it out at your next gate, your options are limited. Atlanta boasts the same expensive and poorly prepared food providers that all the other major airports have. They also have the same type of poor selection of books and magazines to help you bide the time.

So if you find yourself stuck in the many concourses of Atlanta, plug in your earbuds, grab a good book, and tough it out. Every once in awhile, you can look up at the CNN newscast that repeats every 10 minutes.

When you are done visiting the Statue of Liberty, continue your tour by going to Ellis Island.
Ellis Island is a symbol of America’s immigrant heritage. From 1892 to 1954, this immigrant depot processed the greatest tide of incoming humanity in the nation’s history. Nearly twelve million landed here in their search of freedom of speech and religion, and for economic opportunity.

Today, over 40 percent of America’s population can trace their ancestry through Ellis Island.

The museum exhibits chronicle Ellis Island’s role in immigration history and view it in the context of its time and the still broader context of four centuries of immigration to America. The exhibits occupy over 40,000 sq.ft. on three floors of the Main Building; they include museum objects, photographs, prints, videos, interactive displays and oral histories. The largest exhibit is the building itself — the imposing French Renaissance Revival structure designed by Boring and Tilton, built in 1900 and restored to its 1918-1924 appearance.

A popular exhibit at the Ellis Island Immigration Museum is the American Immigrant Wall of Honor. The Wall of Honor is located outdoors, just outside the "Peopling of America" exhibit. The Wall honors America’s immigrants regardless of when they immigrated or through which port they entered. The Wall is currently inscribed with over 700,000 names.

Even if your ancestors did not come through this immigration port, a visit to the island with your family gives some sense of the gratitude that we all should feel to our forefathers for making the hard decision to start a new life in America. While the younger members of your family may bore with the old images and artifacts, a sense of history is important to the education of your family and therefore Ellis Island should be on your list of places to visit.

There are few places in the US that speak to the soul of the country like the Statue of Liberty. It must be one of the most recognizable statues in the world and American citizens are proud of what the statue stands for.

Located on a 12 acre island, the Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World was a gift of friendship from the people of France to the people of the United States and is a universal symbol of freedom and democracy. The Statue of Liberty was dedicated on October 28, 1886, designated as a National Monument in 1924 and restored for her centennial on July 4, 1986.

Visiting the island where Miss Liberty stands is a very enjoyable boat ride from New York City. Once there, you can walk around the island and take some beautiful pictures. The security personnel (a sad reality of life in this age), is quite friendly and you may be able to convince them to take a photo of your entire group for you. If none are around, don’t hesitate to ask another tourist but make sure to return the favor for them.

For years, you could not enter the old statue as it was being refurbished so if you haven’t made this trip lately, it is time to go again on your next trip to New York City. You will have to register for tickets in advance by going to www.statuereservations.com or by calling 866-STATUE4. You need to do this at least 48 hours in advance so plan ahead! You will still not be able to go up to the torch as in decades past but you can at least go to the top of the statue’s pedestal. (Warning: you will have to pass additional security screening to take this part of the tour).

It probably should be required memorization in every American classroom for this famous sonnet that is inscribed in bronze at the base of the statue.

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame,
"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore,
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"
by Emma Lazarus, New York City, 1883

A trip to New York City is not complete without a visit to the Statue of Liberty. Budget 4-5 hours for this activity and your family will remember it for a lifetime.

The owner of the hotel is an American history buff and has placed two life sized statues in the stately courtyard – one of Thomas Jefferson composing the Declaration of Independence and the other of Benjamin Franklin. Keeping Tom and Ben company are beautiful roses and water fountains.

The rooms are very comfortable with modern beds and furniture, a couple of phones per room, and wired Internet access. Two sinks in each room (one in the bathroom and one just outside) ease the frustration of couples getting ready. Each room also features a real fireplace to make a quaint feeling like you are staying in a bed and breakfast. Many of the rooms also feature a small balcony which is great way to spend an evening.

The restaurant is very good but frankly there are better restaurants that are native to this area of the country just down the street. If you are in a rush for dinner, the Duck Club Restaurant is probably fine but I suggest you jump in a car and go down the street to enjoy some other local restaurants that are top notch.

The outside of the hotel is covered in wood shake and brick. This coupled with the many roses that surround the building and dot the parking lot lead to a very New England feeling in a hotel that neighbors Stanford University.

Walt Disney’s various parks in Orlando are obviously the big attraction in town but they are seeing real competition from this park. Islands of Adventure is a much more active and has more thrill-seeking, adventure loving appeal to offer its visitors.

When you enter the park you will walk through the required shops and stores. You will have to dodge the photographers that want to catch the magical day on film. Once you have crossed through this wallet-emptying gauntlet, you are confronted by a choice:

Go left for thrill rides that will rival any park in the US (yes, even Cedar Point in Ohio) OR

Go right for an area dedicated to the zany and crooked world of Dr. Seuss that is guaranteed to thrill the kid in all of us.

This park features several fantastic thrill rides topped off with The Hulk, Dr. Doom, and the Dueling Dragons. It also has one of the best 3D adventure movies ever made: Spiderman.

The park will let you purchase a pass that will get you to the front of the line. This pass is fairly expensive but if you are visiting on a busy day you may have no choice but to make this investment. Otherwise you will risk not being able to partake in all the park has to offer because you will simply run out of time waiting in line.

The admittance to the park is actually quite reasonable. If you are planning on being in Orlando for multiple days, you may want to invest in a multi-day pass and plan on spending partial days at the park. As with most Orlando parks, if you can get to the park very early in the morning and then late in the afternoon you will be able to maximize your enjoyment while minimizing your time waiting in long lines.

HINT: Arrive at any Orlando park at least 60 minutes before they open. Be first in line for your favorite couple of rides and then leave the park for lunch. While you are out of the park, enjoy some Orlando shopping or go to the pool at your hotel. Then go back to the park at 4 or 5 in the afternoon and you will have missed the biggest rush, the heat of the day, the grumpy parents, and the whiny little kids.

If your family is into collecting autographs from characters, you won’t be disappointed in this park. The theme for most of the park are the Marvel superheros (Spiderman, Fantastic Four, Captain America, etc.) coupled with Duddley Do-Right and the Seuss characters. How can you go wrong?

Islands of Adventure, and its sister park Universal Studios Florida, are on the back side of a large shopping and entertainment district called City Walk that will entice you with many ways to fill your hours (and empty your wallet). Make sure you check out Jimmy Buffet’s restaurant for a margarita and Cheeseburger in Paradise.

If I had to choose one park in Orlando to entertain my family, it would be Islands of Adventure. It allows more fun and laughs per dollar spent than any other park.
