There are a lot of options to get out to the small island of Molokini for snorkeling so if you are visiting this part of our 50th state, you should have no trouble finding a way to enjoy this.
The typical excursion will take you by boat from one of the various docks on the island. You will then jump or crawl into the water where you will see the beautiful underwater world. Unless the weather is stormy and you will see hundreds (thousands?) of beautiful fish feeding on the corral and each other. Since it is saltwater, you should have no problems keeping afloat however some boats and excursions may still require you to wear some type of floatation system.
This has to be one of the best zoos in the country! It boasts over 4,000 animals and sits on a 100 acres. The zoo is a leader in “cage-less” exhibits which allows the animals to interact in a way that is similar to their natural habitat. It is also a leader in the birth of wild animals and was the home of the first two Pandas born in the US.
Golf in the desert. It has a unique ability to challenge your game and gives a look and feel to the golf course that is not found in other venues where water is more plentiful.
Loews Ventana is a beautiful destination for golfers. It features 2 Fazio designed golf courses that are incredibly enjoyable and challenging to play. Nearly every listing of top golf resorts in the US will include Loews Ventana Canyon Resort.
Non-golfers will also enjoy the 80 foot waterfall and the luxurious spa. The restaurant is top notch (Mobile 4 Star) and the staff is very polite and accommodating. There are also 8 tennis courts on-site.
Cedar Point amusement park in Sandusky, OH is a roller coaster lover’s amusement park. At the time of this writing there were 17 roller coasters (more than any other in the world) and many of them set some type of record. These roller coasters include the old fashioned Blue Streak, Wildcat, and Gemini (a thrilling wood coaster in its own right) to amazing modern coasters such as Magnum XL-200, Millenium Force, Raptor, and Wicked Twister.
The park is a little hard to get to. It is located on Lake Erie and is a fair drive from either Cleveland or Toledo. Due to its location, many people will have to take long drives to the park and spend the night either before or after. There are dozens of affordable hotels and motels to stay at and here is a link to a few of them.
The owners of Cedar Point also own a few hotels and some of these are attractions to themselves. The Hotel Breakers is actually on the grounds of the park and is a magnificent hotel. You may be interested in staying at the water park based hotel, Castaway Bay, and turn your trip to Cedar Point into a multiple day mini-vacation. You can find other Cedar Point Resorts here.
At the park, you really must try the turkey legs which are a bit of a local treat. And aside from the many thrill rides and roller coasters, make sure that you take the Sky Ride from one end of the park to the other, it is a fun way to travel and see all of the sites.
No trip to the park is complete without purchasing some of its taffy. Save your purchase for the end of the day so you can have a sugar high on the drive to the hotel, home, or airport.
When you look at a map of the US, Florida is very prominently displayed as a peninsula hanging down from Georgia. However, one of the best locations in Florida is not on the massive peninsula
but rather on the “panhandle” portion of the state sitting above the Gulf of Mexico. This strip of land is home to some of the most inviting and enjoyable soft, white sand beaches in the world. The major cities on this coast are Panama City and Destin.
The shore around Destin is dotted almost continuously with large and small developments of hotels and condos. These mini-resorts typically feature pools and free access to the beach. While I may write in the future about individual places to stay, for right now I will focus on the beach.
Depending on the time of year, the beach is beautiful. There is always the chance that when you visit, there will be algae in the water or a swarm of jelly fish will move in but that is the danger whenever you go to the beach.
Almost everywhere you go on this long beach, you will find it to be 30-60 yards deep. This is more than enough room for families to dig castles, fly kites, play catch or just soak in the rays without offending or be offended by others. The beach is typically left unguarded but there are sections where the lifeguards are in attendance.
You can also go into the Choctawhatchee Bay which provides the back side of the small peninsula that Destin sits on. In this bay, where the waves are much more mild, you can easily do various water sports activities such as para-sailing and jet boating.
If you enjoy playing in ocean water, building a sand castle, and relaxing with a good book on a beach then there are very few locations in the world that are as economical and accessible as Destin, FL.
Mission: SPACE is one of the most popular attractions in the park and you will want to visit this pavilion early in the day or get a FASTPASS to decrease your time in line. Even in the slowest of days, you can expect hour long lines for this amazing event.
If you are looking for a hotel in Louisville that will give you a touch of class and a room that doesn’t look like the standard chain hotel, The Seelbach is the place to go.
The Seelbach is an older hotel (built in 1905) and has had the honor of having 9 US Presidents as a guest. The hotel was in “The Hustler” movie, hosted Al Capone in his hey-day, was written about in “The Great Gatsby” novel, and currently is rumored to be haunted by a ghost.
